I have always had issues with my Airpods Pro mic. When I use them for calls, people complain they can hear me very well. I later checked the sound myself and I discovered the audio was low, muffled, tiny and was like the sounds you get from one of these cheap mics.
Initially, I thought it was peculiar to my device but a simple search for the problem online revealed that it was a common issue among Airpods pro users. This led me into digging deep to unravel the cause of the problem. In this write-up, I will explain why the sound is so bad and also offer some suggestions on what you can do to improve the audio quality. So, let’s get started!
So, Why Is Airpods Pro Mic Bad? The poor sound quality of the Airpod’s mic is caused by the Airpods active 8 to 16 kHz SCO Codec. The function of this SCO Codec is that it is in charge of audio transmission using your Airpods Microphone and it is the default codec used across the entire Mac devices.
Therefore, this can lead to the Airpod getting stuck and therefore producing very poor sound. The codec which produces the awesome audio you know Airpods for is called the AAC Codec.
The reason why your Airpods end up transmitting via the SCO codec is because of the limitations of Bluetooth bandwidth.
Normally, Bluetooths do not support high-quality output and input simultaneously and because of this, they end up producing poor quality sound when you pair them to your Apple devices.

How to Fix Airpod’s Mic Poor Audio Quality
I have devoted a lot of time trying to figure out the solution to this problem. I have tried a lot of troubleshooting all geared towards solving this problem.
I have switched the Airpods from my phone to my Mac to check if the problem was from the phone. I have played around changing the Audio MIDI setting of my Mac.
I have tried putting back the Airpod to the case to see if that will work. I have tried escalating to Apple e support and I have read a lot of literature on similar cases and have even tried resetting the device.
In all these, some of these troubleshooting steps do work sometimes, but I have discovered a simpler way of solving this annoying problem.
Like I highlighted earlier before, the main cause of the problem is that the AirPods get stuck in the 16 kHz codec due to the microphone and sound settings. Therefore, what you have to do is simply switch from using the input from the Airpods’ microphone to the microphone input from the inbuilt mic of the device.
In simpler terms, you stop using the Airpod mic and instead use the mic on your apple device. To do this switching, you have to do the following;
Go to the System Settings on your Apple device. You can do this by Navigating to your system’s preference app and pressing on ‘Sound’.
When you open the settings, press the input tab at the top and then click on the devices’ built-in mic Allow for some seconds for the device to change the codec and the sound quality will be great again.
Features of Apple AirPod Pro
In the last quarter of 2019, Apple launched the iconic AirPod Pro which is a higher version of the existing Airpods. The device comes with a lot of unique additions including noise cancellation, better audio experience, and of course a higher price tag of about $250.
Some of the features that make the device really cool are:
- It has an Active noise cancellation capability. With the two microphones running on advanced software, Apple promises users a superior noise-cancelling experience.
- It comes with a built-transparency mode which enables the users to listen to sounds with Active noise cancellation while at the same time hearing sounds from their environment. Magical right?
- It is also designed to reduce discomfort common among other ear-wearing devices. All these are geared towards giving the user a better experience.
- Airpods Pro is designed to be water-resistant. With its IPX4 rating, it can hold up splashing water in all directions. Although it is not supposed to be submerged.
How to fix common AirPods Problems:
If you are a user of Apple’s AirPods, you may encounter one issue or the other once in a while. This does not mean that the device is unstable. With many signals in the world today, such issues are bound to happen.
In this section, we will review some of the common issues you are likely to see when using AirPod and I will guide you on some of the simple troubleshooting steps that you can follow to resolve them.

Inability to Connect
If you are facing this issue whereby your AirPods can not pair with your phone, tablet, or computer, the first thing you need to do is to put them back into the charging box for about 15 seconds after which you bring them out and put them back into your ears.
The next thing you need to do if the initial step didn’t work is to turn off the Bluetooth and turn it on again on your phone, computer or tablet. In most cases, this should solve the connection problem.
In some rare situations, the two fixes above may not fix the issue, you will have to reset either the AirPod or the Bluetooth on the phone or both for it to work.
One AirPod not Playing
You may also face this issue where one of the Airpods cannot connect to your sound source that is a Computer, phone, or laptop.
When this happens, the first thing you need to do is to put both AirPods back into the charging case and allow it to stay for about 15 seconds. You can then bring it out and try wearing it on your ears.
If this didn’t work, you will need to restart the Bluetooth device by simply turning it off and turning it ON again.
If this does not work, it will have to reset either the AirPod or the Bluetooth on the phone. This should solve your problem.
Cannot Connect with a Computer
Although you don’t experience this issue with recently produced machines, maintaining a Bluetooth connection can be troublesome with some machines.
If your computer is not pairing with a computer, there are few things you can try out. The first thing is to put the Airpods back into the case and wait for 15 seconds before bringing them out and retrying the connection.
If that does work, then you have to unpair the Airpod and pair them again. To do this, simply turn off the Bluetooth of the computer and turn it back on or you can Navigate to system Preference, select Bluetooth from there.
Look for the AirPods and disconnect them and then try and pair them again with the computer, this should work in most cases.
Static Audio Quality
Sometimes you can experience static or poor audio quality from the Airpods. There are a lot of things that can be responsible for this and so you have to carry a dep troubleshooting to ascertain the cause of this problem.
First, the Bluetooth connection can be affected by interference. Interference can lead to a lot of problems aside from poor quality. It can also lead to frequent disconnection of the Airpod.
If you notice that the poor audio quality problem is always happening within a particular place, interference is likely to be the issue. If it is in your house, try and find out the device producing the interference and move it away to another location or you can use the Airpods in another place where there will be no interference.
Another fix you can try for this is turning off your Wi-Fi device. A lot of users who have tried this agreed that this worked. So you have to turn off your Wi-Fi whenever you are receiving calls to reduce interference.

AirPods Dropping your Calls
Since late 2017 when Airphods were introduced into the market, dropping of calling intermittently has been a common issue among users of the device. The good news is that there is a simple way to fix this and take calls with just one AirPod in your ear instead of both of them.

If the problem persists, there are other options you can try out on your iPhone. To Start troubleshooting, navigate to the settings of the iPhone, press the Bluetooth section.
You will notice something like an ‘I’ icon inside of a circle next to the Airpods entry. Press that icon and choose the microphone and set the microphone to use either left or right. This should resolve the issue.
You can also try disabling the Automatic Ear detection located at the same section as the Airpods microphone described above. The downside to this is that the battery will likely run down faster as you will be disabling one of the AirPods’ most convenient features.
If all the steps above fail, you may have to reset the Airpod and the iPhone Bluetooth as a last resort.
Low Volume on Android devices
If you use your Airpods with an android device, you may have experienced a situation where the audio volume is quite low compared to iOS devices.
The reason is that these iOS devices have many features which Android devices do not have. These features include the W1 chip and H1 on the Airpods 2 which comes with a wireless charging case and Airpod Pro that is used to interact with the iOS devices.
Since these features are absent in Android devices, there are chances that the Volume will be affected by this. When connecting an AirPod to a device, you have to know that you are dealing with two different Volumes which are the Volume of the AirPod and the Volume of your sound sources (Computer, tablet, or phone).
On Android devices, unlike the iOS device, the volume is not automatically controlled, but there is an easy fix for this deficiency.
For most Android devices, you can modify the volume by pressing either the Volume Up or Volume down button, this will bring up the volume level on your screen, press the down arrow next to the volume control, you will see all the available Volume slides. Check for the one for Bluetooth and decide whether to increase it or decide it as the case may be.
For Samsung Devices, the steps are different even though they run on the Android Operating system. Navigate to Settings, click on connections, tap on Bluetooth. Press the three dots at the top right corner for other options and then turn on the Media Volume Syn. This will automatically give you the same audio level as your iOS devices.
Airpods Not Charging
First. it depends on the type of Airpods you are using. For instance, First-generation users of Airpods may notice that Airpod cases did not come with charging Cases as Apple began shipping the wireless charging case later.
If this is the case you may need to purchase a charging case for your Airpods.
If you are not so sure if the case can charge or not, you need to look out for the LED light. If you see a light outside, it has a wireless charging case, if not it does not.
If you have been using the Airpods for a while and it stopped working, there is a possibility that dust has over time blocked the Airpods from making good contacts with the charging Pins. You can clean this gently using soft linen and see if this improves the charging process.
If this didn’t work, it may be an indicator that the Airpods or Charging case are bad. You can try charging the Airpod with another charging case to see if the problem is from the charging case or the AirPods.
