1. Interference from other Bluetooth Devices

This is the most cause why your Airpods are cutting off from your laptop.  All Bluetooth devices including headphones and Airpods are prone to this Bluetooth interference.

You may be wondering what this Bluetooth interference is all about. Bluetooth interference occurs when more than one device operating at the same wavelength is attempting to connect to a single device at a time thereby disrupting the connection.

For instance, other devices that operate on the same wavelength as your Airpods can cause your Airpods to disconnect from the sound source including your computer.

In my experience, one common device that is commonly responsible for this interference is Wi-Fi routers. This is because the Wi-Fi operates on the same frequency (2.GHz) when communicating with other devices.

Hardware Defect

Airpods are made using miniature electronic components and so physical damage to the Airpods can be responsible for the malfunctioning of your device.  Your AirPods are likely going to follow you everywhere you go and what this means is that there is a higher risk of it getting damaged.

To prevent this, you need to take extra care in protecting the device. An easy way to protect your Airpods is to get a portable protective case that you can move around with which will serve as a shield for the Airpods.

Regular cleaning of the Airpods is also important as it protects the Airpods from dust and dirt accumulation which can affect the proper functioning of the Airpods including their connectivity.

Settings

A wrong setting is enough to mess up your connectivity and cause your Airpod to keep disconnecting from your laptop. In order to prevent Airpods connectivity issues, you need to continuously check the Bluetooth setting of the laptop.

Although Airpods can work well with Windows devices, the connection is not as smooth as it is with Apple devices and you need to make a little adjustment to ensure the proper working of the Airpods with Windows devices.

Battery

If the Airpods battery is low, the connection between the Airpods and the laptops is likely to be very unstable. Your AirPods will automatically disconnect from the laptop when the battery is below 10%. It is therefore important to always keep the Airpod charged if you do not want to experience disruptions in your connection.

iOs Version

An out-of-date iOS version may also be a reason why your AirPods keep disconnecting. If your device is running on an out-of-date version, you run the risk of operating with a device prone to errors, bugs that may be responsible for compatibility issues between the Airpod and other devices including your laptop.

What do I do to Stop my Airpods from disconnecting?

If your AirPods are continuously disconnecting the sound source, there may be a lot of reasons responsible for this as we discussed in the section above. In this section, I will guide you on some of the ways you can employ in fixing this anomaly. Let’s get started.

Examine the Battery of the AirPods

Like the common saying goes ‘First thing First’. The first thing you should check if you notice that your AirPods are connecting is to check the battery level. This is because Airpods are designed to automatically disconnect from the Sound source if the battery goes beyond a certain threshold.

To check the Airpod battery, follow the following steps:

On iOS Devices:

  • Open the Lid of the Airpods and place them close to the device you intend to connect them to. E.g Place the Airpods close to an Ipad.
  • Wait for some seconds, the battery level of the Airpods will be displayed on the device screen.
  • Another way of doing this is using the battery widget. Here you will see the charge status of your AirPods.

On Mac:

  • Bring the Airpods out of their case.
  • Click on the Bluetooth icon located on the menu bar of the iPad. If you can’t find the Bluetooth icon there, it means the iPad’s Bluetooth is turned off, you can enable this by navigating to System Preferences > Bluetooth and ticking the “Show Bluetooth in the menu bar.
  • Click the Bluetooth ion
  • You will see the current battery level of the Airpods when you hover over the Airpods’ name.

Confirm that the Bluetooth is not turned off

It is possible that the reason why the AirPods cannot connect to your sound source is that the Bluetooth is turned off. For your Airpods to be able to connect to your device, you need to turn on the Bluetooth on your device.

If you have any problem connecting your Airpods to your device, you should try turning off the Bluetooth and turning it on again. This procedure makes sure that only the closest device is the first to connect.

If you do not know how to enable the Bluetooth of your device, you can follow the instruction below:

Enabling Bluetooth on PC:

  • At the bottom-right corner, right-click on the start button and then click on settings
  • Go to the settings on Windows 10
  • You can enable the Bluetooth by clicking on the device and toggling the on and off switch to the right.

How to Enable Bluetooth on Apple devices:

  • Navigate to the settings app on your phone.
  • From settings, tap on Bluetooth
  • Turn the Switch to the right and your Bluetooth is enabled.

Insert the Airpods into the Case and Bring them Out

If your AirPods are constantly disconnecting, you may need to just do a simple trick of putting them back into the case and bringing them out again. Inserting the Airpod into the sockets removes all forms of paired connection and starts the charging process.

Remove the Airpods from the case after a few seconds. This will automatically reconnect to your device and when the lid case is opened, it will try to start a new connection.

Reset your AirPods

Resetting is a troubleshooting skill that can solve most common Airpod problems such as not connecting, charging problems,s, and intermittent disconnections.  Let me state here that resetting the Airpods means removing all already paired devices and so the Airpod is returned back into the initial factory setting. To reset the Airpod, follow the steps below:

  • Insert the Airpods into its case and charge them up to at least ¾ of full charge
  • Close the Airpod Case
  • Hold down the reset button at the back of the Airpods case for 25 seconds
  • You will notice the indicator light will change from flashing white to flashing amber. This is an indicator of a successful reset.

Disable Automatic Ear Detection

This can be a potential reason why the Airpods are not connecting. Each of the Airpod has a sensor. This sensor detects when the Airpod is in use or not. It is possible that the sensor can have a problem detecting whether the Airpod is plugged into the ear or not.

When the Airpods cannot tell if the device is plugged into the ear not, they try to save power by disconnecting from whatever devices they are connected to.

This problem is more common when you are having issues with keeping your Airpod in place. In this scenario, a little change in your position can lead to the Automatic Ear detection feature triggering disconnection. It is best to disable this feature when you notice that your Airpods keeps disconnecting from its paired device.

To do this,

  • Ensure that the Airpod case is open. Navigate to the setting, click on Bluetooth.
  • You will notice an ‘I’ symbol that is on the right side of your Airpods, tap on it.
  • Disable the Automatic Ear detection feature.
